I love sitting on our deck and knitting. Above the deck there is a big red oak tree that provides lovely shade and a beautiful sound as the wind blows through the leaves. There is only one problem. Don't let the small size of these acorns fool you. They fall from a great height and pack quite a punch. Often they ricochet off the table and pick up speed as they careen past my head. So far I've had no direct hits but just in case my luck is running out...

Oh my... I sorry to say that the story and especially the pic of your predicament sent me into such a giggling fit, I am having a real hard time writing this comment. I miss the big oak trees, I remember climbing them as kid back in England, we don't have them here in Alaska. I also a have a deck that I like to knit or spin on it, though I have never had to wear protective gear. Wishing you safe and happy knitting.
p.s. I completed the middle name game that you tag me with.
Your entry made me laugh, too -- bringing back memories of when I lived on the North Umpqua River outside Roseburg, Oregon, surrounded by oak trees - my deck area at times sounded like the target area for small-artillery fire - some years were worse than others. I wasn't smart enough to think about the helmet, though!
We often spend hours dodging nut casings tossed at us by the squirrels in the trees in the back garden. Even in downtown Philadelphia we have a chance to "engage" with local fauna. Thanks for your entertaining reflections!
Oh, I've been hit by acorns from aloft - wearing the helmet is a pretty good idea, if you're in an acorn-heavy zone!
I haven't checked to see whether the squirrels were hurling acorns at me. Hmmmm. That could be a little game they have cooked up to entertain themselves before winter sets in.
Our house is surrounded by very large oak trees... willow oak, white oak, chestnut oaks...and the size of some of the acorns that fall on us... HUGE. We have a metal roof, so in the autumn breezes, it can sound like hail. But getting to and from the car is an adventure..I have been pinged by acorns many a time. I may have to use your helmet technique the next time I bring groceries home!
Thanks for the kind comment on my blog!
Ha! We have a few huge white oaks in our front yard, and the acorns are making a terrible racket this past week. I wake up all night long hearing something like a rock being thrown at the window. But it's not my sweetie trying to serenade me...just another acorn.
